Philosophy

On Her Profession

I have the great joy of sharing my deep and abiding appreciation of art with my students. While we can't all be Michelangelos, Renoirs, or O'Keefes, the committment, creativity, and vision great artists bring to their work is something the students strive to understand and bring to their own artwork. I feel this is best accomplished through a discipline based art education program that consists not only in the production of art, but also of students studying art history to understand art in relation to culture; learning to make judgments about what is artistically successful, and developing a sense of aesthetic appreciation.

On Kingsbury

The Kingsbury community is a great supporter of the art program. Parent volunteers in each class present supplemental art history lessons monthly through the Art Reach program and assist with student exhibits. Each new display of art generates great enthusiasm not only on the part of students and parents but also faculty and administration. A field trip to the Detroit Institute of Art often empties out the school and fills the busses because of the number of staff and parents who want to share the experience with the children.

On Kingsbury Kids

The small size of our classes allows teachers to interact and work with each child individually to develop her/his potential. My daughter was fortunate enough to attend Kingsbury during middle school and, like most of our Kingsbury Kids, came away with great self confidence, intellectual curiosity and the academic credentials that have paved the way to an exciting and successful high school experience at Cranbrook/Kingswood.
